Trust me, no-one handed me a job- I worked for it!
I learned from everyone I came in contact with, everyone became my teacher.
I went from the reception desk, making coffee for my boss to being the boss and having someone make coffee for me.
It’s my experiences that I want to share with you.
Today’s topic is from a lecture entitle -Being the NEW boss in an OLD company
You got the job, Congratulations.
No matter how many years you have been in leadership, when you start a new job you’re the New Kid on the Block.
This can be a difficult blow to your professional ego. Inevitably, someone will try to tell you how to manage. They will start talking to you as if this is your first job, further causing you mental anguish. This is especially true if you have been in the same field of business for more than 5 years.
So what do you do…
Curb the desire to don your SuperMan cape and save the company. I know you see TONS of things you want to change and do differently. Trust me, they recognized your potential that’s why they hired you. But this isn’t the time. Timing will be key to securing your Leadership legacy.
There is no need to reinvent the wheel that has been turning. Obviously, they have managed without you so take a minute to access your situation.
Employees can smell change. You are the last person anyone wants to see come around asking a bunch of questions. They have undoubtably discussed the new manager in the break room, as the rumor mill beings to turn.
Take a small task, one that only needs to change …slightly.
Apply a generous amount to armor all to that wobbly tire and shine the heck out of it. I mean spit shine it if you have too, but don’t change it.
The staff will love you, and relax around you. They will view you as someone hired to HELP them not Change them.
After you have gained their confidence…
the phone booth (with your cape inside) will be waiting for you.
